Summer of 2010

Since the mixes from the 2010’s are, in some ways, the most difficult to put together, I’ve decided to kick off with them.

I think the challenge here comes two directions. On the one hand, these songs are of a very young vintage. Albums from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even the 2000s have had some time to gain a reputation. I’ve also had an opportunity to distance myself from preconceived notions and prejudices (i.e. Disco Sux!).

Additionally the way music is being released has changed so drastically. The focus is much more on the individual song than on the album – especially for pop music and major-market acts. Songs are released more outside of the summer months so that they gain traction and are popular during the summer but aren’t technically released then. On top of that, there are a lot of trends in music that I’m just not that into, though I’ve used this as an opportunity to discover some new artists and given a second chance to others that I thought I wouldn’t like.
