Go Outside: The Summer of 2011
So we’ve finally returned to the 2010s. As I said back in the first ‘mixtape’ posting, I’ve been concerned about how difficult making the newer playlists would be. This one wasn’t too bad since there are a number of great songs that were released on albums during this summer. Also, I believe that this was deep in my obsession with eMusic – a late, lamented music subscription service where you could download a limited number of albums each month for a subscription fee – so I had a good foreknowledge of what was there.
What can I say about 2011… I was going to say it wasn’t an eventful summer but, actually, some crazy stuff happened… Sadly, the Workers’ Youth League Camp massacre was that July in Norway. On the plus side, we were solidly in the grasp of the Arab Spring and Gaddafi was effectively overthrown when rebels captured Tripoli. In space, it was very eventful – NASA shut down the Space Shuttle program, the Mars rover sent back evidence of liquid water on Mars, and the planet Neptune completed its first orbit since it was discovered in 1846.
But enough about that… Here is the music!
